ABOUT THE SPEAKER…

Dr. Kamal Abdul-Karim was born in Lebanon in 1940 to a prominent Presbyterian family.  He earned his BA (1962) and first MA (1972) degrees in English Literature and Education and the Teaching of English as a Second Language at the American University of Beirut, and his second MA (1976) and Ph.D (1980) in Linguistics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign campus.

Kamal and Leila married in 1964 and have two sons Imad (44) and Raja (40). He emigrated with his family to the USA in 1973.  He and Leila retired to Prescott in 2007 and transferred their membership from First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills, CA to Trinity Presbyterian Church in Prescott.

Kamal spends his retirement studying the Holy Bible, the Noble Qur’an, and medicine: the Bible to gain a better understanding of God’s Word and to have a closer relationship with Him; the Qur’an to better be able to reach out to our Muslim brothers and sisters with the Gospel; and medicine to better take care of his health and the health of his family.

Additionally, Kamal and Leila help with the Middle Eastern Presbyterian Fellowship (MEPF), hosted by North Minster Presbyterian Church in Tucson, AZ where Kamal preaches the Sunday sermon and conducts the Monday Bible study once a month.

Kamal promises to answer all of your questions, provided you remember that “I don’t know” is a legitimate answer.

SYNOPSIS – A very brief comparative introduction to Islam covering definition and elucidation of terms, including “jihad” and “shirk”; compilation of the Noble Qur’an vs. compilation of the Holy Bible; immutability of the Word of God and the theory of abrogation — as time permits.

Bring in your gently used children’s or maternity clothing (no holes, tears, or repairs needed) on Friday, August 23 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. For each bag you drop off, you will receive a voucher; return on Saturday morning to shop (vouchers or $5 per bag). Early birds are welcome at 7:00 AM for a $5 donation.

Brand new band T-shirts ($10) are available during the week in the church office, as well as at Elevate on June 28.

Bring a white t-shirt to decorate for the annual Kiwanis Kiddie Parade (held Friday morning, July 5 in downtown Prescott). Child care not available; parents, please plan to be present during decorating!

The annual Prescott Kiwanis Kiddie Parade will start Friday, July 5 at 8:30 AM. Wear the shirt you decorated at church or your best red-white-and-blue! Meet on Cortez Street down from the old post office; ALC’s entry is toward the back – look for the balloons! After the parade we will go to the south side of the Yavapai Courthouse for some ol-fashioned games and a family picnic. RSVP for the picnic by Thursday, June 27; cost is $10 per family.

This annual program sponsored by ALC is a community based music instruction curriculum designed to provide quality instrumental instruction that can help fill the void caused by a lack of funding for similar programs in our public schools. Sessions include daily instrument lessons, theory and ear training, handchimes, music activities, and rhythmic drumming.

• Beginning keyboard, violin, and cello are available for those students entering grades 3-6
• Band instrument instruction (clarinet, flute, saxophone, cornet/trumpet, trombone) is available for students entering grades 4-6.
• Band and String Camp if offered to students entering grades 5-7 and who have completed a grade 6 school music program, MusicStart 2012, or at least one year of private study.

Each rehearsal is 30 minutes in length and is only for the following Sunday. The singing schedule is as follows:

10:30 AM service on June 9, with  rehearsal on Thursday, June 6 from 7:00—7:30 PM.

8:00 AM service on June 23, with rehearsal on Thursday, June 20 from 7:00—7:30 PM.

10:30 AM service on June 30, with rehearsal on Thursday, June 27 from 7:00—7:30 PM.

Middle schoolers through adults are welcome!  Music reading is helpful but not required.  Contact Minister of Music, Jim Klein in the church office.
